SUMMARY:Album Launch - Brian Hughes & Dave Sheridan “However long the day”
DESCRIPTION:“Album launch”\n\n\nThe Old Ground Hotel Ennis\, upstairs room.\n\n\nSunday 13th November 2022 @ 2:30pm\n\n\nBrian Hughes & Dave Sheridan\n“However long the day”\n\n\nFree entry.\n\n\n***********************************\n\n\nBoth Brian Hughes and Dave Sheridan have been very well-known musicians on the traditional Irish music scene for many years now\, having both recorded highly successful albums in the past.\n\n\nBrian & Dave have known one another for many years\, and have played in sessions together at many different venues during their careers but this is the first time that these two musicians have recorded together\, and they have certainly produced an absolute gem of an album\, which has been well worth the wait.\n\n\n\nBrian has produced six CDs to date\, and has become a hugely influential whistle player to musicians all over the world. Widely regarded as one of the best players of his generation\, his playing has changed the course of whistle playing as we know it today and his piping has a style which seems to be uniquely perfect for his understated mastery\, in particular on the flat set of uilleann pipes.\n\nHe is highly sought after for his teaching skills on both whistle and pipes and he has taught\, performed and toured at festivals and music schools all over Ireland\, England & Europe.\n\n\n\nDave has also recorded many albums over the last number of years\, and has become a hugely respected musician at home and abroad. He has recorded with Ciarán Somers and Nicolas Quemener on a recording called ‘Faoi Bhláth’ and has also recorded two albums with ‘The Raw Bar Collective’\, featuring Brendan McCarthy\, Conal O Gráda\, Colm Murphy and Nell Ní Chróinín. He has played all over the globe including tours to China\, Japan\, Mozambique and USA. Dave is a fiddle player of huge depth and warmth\, and he possesses a huge repertoire of music.\n\nThis is hugely evident in his beautiful style of playing on this CD\, where his phrasing blends perfectly with the sound of both the whistle and the Uilleann Pipes.\n\nFor this new recording\, two incredible traditional musicians have entwined their musical journeys together\, and they have produced a recording full of sound and soul\, mystery and magic\, depth and delight. The sound of the Uilleann pipes and Fiddle has for such a long time been recognised as one of the most glorious combinations in Traditional Irish music\, but when this fusion of sound is played down in the flat key of C by two masters of their own craft\, the sound transforms to something greater than music alone. The hypnotic trance like quality of the music oozing from these rooted musicians seems to enter every pore\, and transports the listener to a very different place indeed.\n\n“However Long the Day” will transport listeners for many years to come\, and will surely be\nrecognised as one of the finest duet pairings we have heard for many years. The music is further enhanced on this new recording by the amazingly talented musicians Garry O Briain\, Jim Higgins\, Michelle Sheridan & Eric de Buitlear\, who all feature on the album.

SUMMARY:Album launch - John Tunney "The Immigrant: A Stone on the Cairn of Tradition”
DESCRIPTION:“Album launch”\n\n\nJohn Tunney “The Immigrant: A Stone on the Cairn of Tradition”\n\n\nSunday 13th Nov 2022 @ 1pm\n\n\nVenue: The café in the green\, (The copper jug)\n\n\nFree entry.\n\n\n*******************************\n\n\nThe Immigrant: A Stone on the Cairn of Tradition\, John Tunney\nAlso featuring Paddy Óg\, Cathal\, Brigid\, Michael and Conall Tunney\, Maura Hickey\, and a dozen more of the extended family.\n\n\nJohn Tunney comes from a long line of west Ulster traditional singers that includes his father\, the legendary Paddy Tunney\, and his famed grandmother Brigid Tunney. This is his first solo album.\n\nTHE IMMIGRANT has been described by Rita Gallagher (TG4 Traditional Singer of the Year\, 2017) as ‘a wonderful weave of songs that traverse Ireland and beyond\, a treasure trove\, a stunning mix that includes four new compositions from John and three from the late Paddy Tunney\, along with some of the most well-known and familiar “Tunney songs”. A standout track is ‘Hybrasil’\, Paddy’s ode and love poem to his wife Sheila\, which John sings so beautifully.’\n\n\nFrom the very first song\, the title track ‘The Immigrant’\, this album sets out to show that unaccompanied\, traditional song forms can tackle even the most burning current issues of contemporary Ireland. This searing tale of a Bosnian survivor of the Srebrenica massacre\, who has made a home for himself and his family in Mayo\, has been labelled ‘the best\, most important song to appear on the scene for a long time’ by former Critics Group members Jim Carroll and Pat McKenzie. The modern Clare emigration song\, ‘Around the Hand’\, with the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Centre as its background\, is in a similar vein.\n\n\n\nAlongside such new songs are John’s interpretations of Tunney classics\, including ‘The Rambling Boys of Pleasure’ and ‘The Royal Blackbird’\, as well as stirring reworkings of less well-known family versions of ‘The Pride of Glencoe’ and ‘Captain Coulston’.\n\n\n\nA key component of the album’s rich sound texture are six duets involving John’s five siblings and his son\, Conall\, and a further two tracks on which many family voices sing in unison. The result is a body of recordings that Lillis Ó Laoire (TG4 Traditional Singer of the Year\, 2020) has described as ‘wonderful soundscapes that present old verses and new with deep characteristic conviction. These songs send resonances of a rich past echoing into the future.’

SUMMARY:Album launch - Simon Pfisterer “Halfway there” & “Another way to go”
DESCRIPTION:“Album launch” \nLucas’ bar\, Parnell St. Ennis (back room) \nSaturday 12th. November 2022 @ 3pm \nSimon Pfisterer “Halfway there” & “Another way to go” \nFree entry. \n************************* \nDouble Album Release – \nSimon Pfisterer: “Half Way There” & “Another Way to Go” \nUilleann piper Simon Pfisterer is releasing his debut albums “Half Way There” and “Another Way to Go” at this year’s Ennis Trad Fest.\nGrowing up in his home of Bavaria\, Germany\, Simon started to play different kinds of bagpipes from all over Europe at the age of 8 and found his love for the uilleann pipes and Irish traditional music when he was 12. After finishing school\, in 2016 he moved to Ireland to study Irish Traditional Music at the University of Limerick where he graduated in 2020. \nFor his debut release as a solo musician\, Simon decided to not only record one\, but two albums:\n“Half Way There”\, implying the half-way mark of the proverbial 21 years it takes to be a piper Simon reached recently\, contains solely traditional music. Taking many clear influences from important pipers\, past and present\, it constitutes a humble bow in front of past masters and the tradition. \n“Another Way to Go” on the other hand\, shows Simon’s abilities of thinking outside the box and adapting music that was not written for the uilleann pipes onto the instrument. 16 tracks of classical music\, ranging from 16th century Spanish choral works adapted for 3 full sets of uilleann pipes\, over fugues by Bach\, country dances by Mozart\, to 20th Century avantgarde compositions\, jazz and videogame classics\, show what is possible on the uilleann pipes.

SUMMARY:Album launch - Ályth McCormack “Aig an taigh”
DESCRIPTION:“Album launch” \nÁlyth McCormack- “Aig an taigh” \nSaturday 12th November 2022 @2pm \nLucas’ bar\, Parnell st. Ennis (back room) \nFree entry. \n*************************** \nAig an taigh: \nAs the title suggests\, Aig an taigh was recorded at home. During the pandemic\, we had time to reflect and learn. My husband (Noel Eccles) and I had never spent so much time together nor collaborated in such limited circumstances.\nVoice and percussion might not be the first combination you think of\, but we decided to sit down and figure it out.\nNiamh O’Brien and I regularly tour Germany\, but as tours were cancelled due to Covid-19\, we decided to record a concert at home together to connect. Recording ourselves\, we were out of our comfort zone: I felt a need to get back to my roots. We looked at some familiar songs before adding new ones. I feel a real sense of gratitude for where we live in Co. Wexford; the landscape surrounding us is inspiring\, so we let it take a hand in guiding us. \nThis album is dedicated to Paddy Moloney. \nNoel and I both worked extensively with Paddy. Initially\, he was my boss\, but latterly he was my friend. I learned so much from working with Paddy and The Chieftains. He was driven\, passionate\, full of mischief\, dedicated\, talented\, and a natural collaborator; he introduced me to a world of music\, musicians\, singers\, and dancers. I am so grateful\, and Paddy\, you are sorely missed.

DESCRIPTION:“Book launch”\n\n\nJoe Queally’s “Echoes from a civil war”\n\n\nSaturday 12th November 2022 @2pm\n\n\nVenue: The Café on the green\, (The copper jug”\n\n\nFree entry.\n\n\n********************************\n\n\nEchoes from a Civil War tells two stories of violent death in rural Ireland during the nineteen twenties. In December 1925\, at Fanore\, north Clare\, Guard Thomas Dowling was cut down at night by shotgun blasts aimed at him from behind the cemetery wall as he cycled past on routine duties.\n\n\nIn this riveting book\, Joe Queally analyses these shocking incidents for the first time\, placing them firmly in historical context. He identifies the main protagonists in each case\, describes in detail the progression of events\, the reaction of the authorities to each killing and their frustrated attempts to bring those responsible to justice.\n\n\nBased on a wide range of sources\, reinforced by skilful and sensitive use of the oral history of each community\, the memories of people who lived through it\, and which he has carefully gathered over two decades\, this is a fascinating book\, which should be read by anyone interested in the Civil War or the history of community conflict.

The fact that this collection has come out of a period where those inter-personal possibilities had been removed is a testament to Jason O’Rourke’s creativity. In his descriptions of the tunes and their titles you can see Jason conjuring up and re-imagining all those human connections that make Irish traditional music such a vibrant art form. It’s all about people and places. Through these tunes we hear Jason reaching out from his adopted home of Belfast\, through every corner of Ireland where there’s a good tune to be had\, to places as far-flung as Scotland\, Italy\, India and Cambodia. We hear the echoes of all the musicians past and present that have helped to form Jason’s musical identity.”\n\n\nNiall Vallely\n\n\nhttp://jasonorourke.info/\nhttps://www.facebook.com/jasonconcertina/\n\n\nYou can find his music on Bandcamp:\nhttps://jasonorourke.bandcamp.com/

Anthony has been a member of the world-renowned Kilfenora Ceili Band for almost 3 decades and has recorded 7 studio albums with the band in that time. \nThis cheekily titled album\, “Breath-Taking”\, alludes to the countless breaths that Anthony has taken to make music on the flute\, in a career that has already spanned over 40 years.\nIn this collection of his favourite tunes both old and new he draws on the influences of his native Clare and further a field while playing them in his own unique style. Staying true to the Tradition while exploring new ground is at the heart of Anthony’s musical philosophy and is reflected throughout Breath-Taking. \nHe is joined on this recording by friends and family. SUMMARY:Album launch - Good morning to your nightcap “Stirred and waked anew”
DESCRIPTION:Album launch!\nGood morning to your nightcap\n“Stirred and waked anew”\nSaturday 13th November 2021 @ 1pm.\nThe Queens Hotel\, Ennis\, Co. Clare.\nFree entry\, all ages welcome! \n************************ \nGood Morning to Your Nightcap – “Stirred And Waked Anew” \n  \n‘Stirred And Waked Anew’ follows Good Morning to Your Nightcap’s eponymous recording released in 2015. This album is a collection of music reflecting the musicians’ personal influences featuring tunes and airs from Ireland\, with forays into the music of Shetland\, Denmark and Austurias. Tracy O’Donnell guests on the album providing stunning vocals on the songs ‘The County Tyrone’ and ‘An Bonnán Buí’; indeed\, the album owes its title to a line from An Bonnán Buí. As Desy\, Ruadhrai\, Ryan and Paul were brought together musically in the shadow of Cavehill\, in North Belfast\, it is entirely fitting that Cavehill’s familiar outline features prominently on the album cover welcoming in a brand-new dawn. \n  \nMusicians:\nDesy Adams (flute) was born and bred in Belfast\, Co Antrim and is a fine exponent of the Northern style of flute playing. Desy started playing tin whistle in the 1980s before moving onto the flute. He spent time living in Denmark and Galway before returning to Belfast in the early 2000s. Desy played with traditional group Na Dorsa with whom he recorded a CD in the late 1990s and has also featured on the Wooden Flute Obsession CD. Desy has toured and played at many festivals throughout Europe and America.\nRuadhrai O’Kane (fiddle / viola) comes from Dungiven\, Co Derry and has lived in Belfast since going to university in 1995. Ruadhrai played fiddle with the traditional music group Óige for around 10 years up to 2001 recording 3 albums and touring extensively throughout Ireland\, UK\, Europe and beyond. More recently Ruadhrai enjoys playing in sessions\, teaching fiddle workshops\, and has appeared at various European festivals. \n  \nRyan O’Donnell (banjo / bouzouki / guitar) hails from Omagh\, Co Tyrone and has been accompanying traditional music since the age of 11 on guitar\, piano and bouzouki. Ryan is a much sought-after accompanist with a style noted for providing a steady and musical foundation behind the tune. He is also a fine banjo player and features on several tracks on this recording. Ryan performs at sessions and festivals throughout Ireland and has appeared on over 10 recordings in the last 15 years. \n  \nPaul Maguire (bodhran) is a Belfast native who is well known within traditional music circles. Now retired\, Paul spent several years in his youth traveling the high seas exploring faraway lands which developed his appreciation for music and culture. Paul has played the bodhran for over 35 years and is a veteran of many fleadhs and festivals. Paul has a very distinctive\, unique playing style and has developed an equally unique knack for staying up late\, so he doesn’t miss a trick! \n  \nGuest Musician:\nTracy O’Donnell (nee Ryan) (vocals) comes from Newport\, Co Tipperary and began learning music at the age of 10 with well-respected female musician of Co Limerick\, Peg Ryan. Tracy has taught flute and whistle in her local area for many years and returned to full time education in 2010 completing a B.A. in Irish Traditional Music & Dance at the University of Limerick. Tracy has travelled to Europe and America over the years with various groups and has recorded on several recordings including Denis Carey’s ‘Newport Town’ and on Stevie Dunne’s ‘Banjo’ album.

Mastering an impossibly broad palette of sounds on his acoustically prepared instrument\, his virtuosic live-looping experiments are heard on various feature films (by Oscar-winning and Cannes-winning directors)\, television series (as soundtrack and theme music)\, independent screen productions (from documentaries to animation)\, and 20+ albums (from experimental fusion to free improvisation). He has toured as a featured soloist on diverse stages from secluded Scandinavian clubs (Torrek) and Mediterranean cafés (Assembly Point) to packed-out European arenas (Riverdance) and major international festivals (Anxo Lorenzo Band). \nVisit www.EoghanNeff.com \nEoghan Neff’s second solo album\, ‘unrecalled’\, presents a series of alternative duets with fellow radical sonic explorers from Iceland\, Spain and Ireland: LAR Legido (prepared drums & found percussion)\, Seán Mac Erlaine (adapted car hooter)\, Germán Díaz (zanfona)\, Caoimhe Doyle (foley)\, Anxo Lorenzo (gaita galega)\, Atli Örvarsson (una corda) and Sean Carpio (drums & spring tank).\nConceived as an art-box album\, ‘unrecalled’ is a dialogue about our relationship with memory told through musical interaction with archival photographs\, documentary film\, contemporary mixed-media on canvas\, original illustrations\, and a variety of phrasal artforms. “A true Irish devil violinist” (Sächsische Zeitung)\, “demonic and stunning” (IOM Today)\, “if he has sold his soul to the devil to play as he does\, he has definitely got the better part of the deal!” (Fatea Magazine).

SUMMARY:Book Launch - The Liverpool Ceili band 'The Spirit of the Reels by Ray Rooney'
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 10th November 2019\, The Old Ground Hotel\, Ennis\, @3pm \nFree admission. \n\nThe Liverpool Ceili band – “The Spirit of the Reels by Ray Rooney” \nThe book tells the story the Band from its origins in post war Liverpool through to the 1970s. The story encompasses the growth of Irish traditional music on Merseyside and in Ireland through this period\, as well as the triumphs of the Band in competition. \nHow the book came about: I am married to Máire the eldest daughter of Sean McNamara (Sean Mc)\, a founder member of the Band. Unfortunately\, Sean Mc passed away a few years ago. We often discussed the possibility of a book being written about the Band. But for all the discussions\, the book never materialised. Then one day\, when work was being done at the family home – where Máire’s mother Brenda still lives – old photos\, articles and memorabilia that had been left undisturbed for years\, tumbled from a wardrobe. This seemed to be ‘a message’ from Sean Mc that we should be getting on with it. The decision was made\, and Brenda commissioned me to write the book. \nThe Clare connection: Sean Mc’s father was from Castlepark outside Kilmihil. The family were regular visitors to Clare and Sean was evacuated to Kilmilhil during World War Two. From his teenager years he was playing music in the ‘house dances’ of the area (in the 1940s and 1950s). Another renowned fiddle player from Liverpool\, and great friend of Sean Mc’s\, Eamon Coyne\, accompanied him on many of these occasions. Eamon (another founder member of the Band) and Sean Mc were picking up many local tunes and were influenced by the Clare style of fiddle playing. These tunes came over to Liverpool and many became part of the Liverpool Céilí Band repertoire. Because of these links the Band was known as a ‘Clare band’ in Ireland. This was reinforced by their legendary appearances at the Fleadh Nua in Ennis and then the Cheol Kilmihil in the 1970s. These were joyous occasions as Band Members from the 1960s (Kit Hodge\, Frank Horan and Charlie Lennon) would join them again\, on stage and in session.\nThe Band were ground-breaking\, in that they became the first non-Irish band to be crowned All-Ireland Champions in 1963 at Mullingar; a feat that they repeated in 1964 at Clones. They won the Oireachtas Céilí Band titles in 1962 and 1963 in the Mansion House in Dublin. The Band toured Ireland regularly and ‘the States’ in 1967. They played on Sunday Night at the London Palladium and at the Albert Hall. One of the moments that the Band were rightly proud of\, was that they were invited over to play at the Jubilee celebrations of the Easter Rising\, in Dublin in 1966. \nFor all their honours\, the Band were famed for the ‘great life’ in their music and their ability to enthuse dancers. The book tells of the great comradeship within the Band and is laced through with many humorous stories. It contains individual biographies of the 14 musicians who played with the Band during this era.

SUMMARY:Album Launch - 'Carlos\, Sweeny & McCartin'
DESCRIPTION:Sunday 10th November 2019\, The Old Ground Hotel\, Ennis @ 2pm. \nFree admission. \n\n“Carlos\, Sweeny & McCartin” \nCarlos Sweeney McCartin is a no nonsense recording of Fiddle and Flute accompanied by guitar. \nThis album of Jigs and Reels is uncompromising in its direct reflection of traditional Irish music as played in sessions in the north west of Ireland today. There are no token tracks of reflective airs or senselessly obscure exhibition pieces. \nHaving met for a tune on a winters evening in Cryan’s Teach Ceoil in Carrick-on-Shannon\, it was immediately apparent that this trio had a compatibility both musically an personally. A decision was made there and then to record. Another meeting in ‘The Haunted Room’ above Cryan’s front bar saw this album arranged and rehearsed. \nAn integral part of the sound and shape of this album is the contribution of the recording engineer\, Dave Sheridan at Souround Sound Bud Studios. Not only did he provide the tools and venue to get the best from the instruments\, his easy manor\, and good humour got the best out of the players too. When it came to arranging\, his advice was so indispensable that he quickly fell into the roll of co-producer. The album was mixed exquisitely by Donagh Hennessey and polished and buffed with the addition of George McAdam on banjo\, John Joe Kelly on Bodhran and Donal Lunny on Bouzouki and Bodhran. \nThe choice of tunes\, settings and arrangements have an assured consistency. The influence of musicians like Matt Molloy\, Cathal Hayden\, Frankie Gavin and Noel Hill as well as bands like Planxty\, The Bothy Band\, Dervish and Lúnasa is comfortable common ground for these men. \nCarlos Sweeney McCartin is energetic and rambunctious\, unbridled and unapologetic. \nDylan Carlos – Fiddle\nDylan comes from a very musical family in Co Roscommon. Having grown up in the home of flute playing\, Dylan took the road less travelled for a Rossie and took up the fiddle\, but is still heavily influenced by the music in his local area. A member of the Knocknashee Ceili Band\, He also performs and teaches regularly at festivals and workshops around the country and abroad\, having played at festivals in England and France in recent months. \nCein Sweeney – Flute\nCein Sweeney is from killeshandra co Cavan a small town in west Cavan with a proud reputation of solid Irish music\, Cein has toured many places such as Spain American and across the uk with many groups\, Cein also won the all Ireland senior flute competition in 2015. Cein has taught music across the whole of Ireland at various workshops\, festivals and fleadh cheoils \nJohn McCartin – Guitar\nJohn comes from Newtowngore County Leitrim. Starting out as a fiddle payer\, his interest in accompaniment brought him to the guitar. He holds a First Class Honours Master of Arts Degree in Irish Traditional Music Performance. He is a member of the supergroup Garadice and regularly plays and records with some of Irelands best known musicians.

SUMMARY:Album Launch - Charlie Le Brun 'Madness is Convention'
DESCRIPTION:Sat 9th November 2019\, The Queens Hotel (The Sanctuary) Ennis @ 7:45pm \nFree admission \nCharlie Le Brun\, “Madness is convention” \nCharlie Le Brun is a flute player based in Dublin\, Ireland. Born in Brittany\, on the west coast of France\, Charlie was immersed in the local traditional culture from a very young age\, through speaking the Breton language and joining the many Fest-Noz all over the country (Breton ‘music and dance’ gatherings). Charlie initially started playing classical music before switching to the traditional Irish wooden flute in his early teens. Thereafter in 2008\, he moved to Westport (Co. Mayo) where he joined various daily sessions alongside many accomplished musicians. \nHe has kept on perfecting his craft ever since! Also\, all along his musical journey\, Charlie has always strived to preserve the natural and warm sound of the timber flute. As for the repertoire\, Le Brun enjoys playing old traditional Irish tunes as much as composing and interpreting tunes of a more contemporary style. \nCharlie’s acclaimed debut album ‘Madness is Convention’ was recorded live in Belfast by Dónal O’Connor at RedBox Studios in January 2019. No post-production modifications were made to the original tracks\, in order to preserve the authenticity and the intimacy of a musical moment shared in the studio by the musicians: Charlie Le Brun (Flute)\, Aoife Kelly (Concertina)\, Eamon Rooney (Bodhrán) and Feilimí O’Connor (Guitar). As Charlie often likes to say\, ‘Traditional Music is all about quality moments\, great people and a lot of fun’. \n“A young man in a hurry\, multi-talented and multi-style. A force to be reckoned with in the future.”\nAlec Monaghan (Irish Music Magazine) \n“I’ve listened to the CD many times\, it’s wonderful! Charlie’s playing is rich\, full and very soulful. The accompaniment feel is obviously contemporary and the CD offers a blend of traditional and contemporary sounding tunes – a perfect blend indeed.” James Kelly (Patrick Street\, Planxty)\nMore info: charlielebrun.com
