Traditional songs have captured the heartbreak\, treachery\, eviction\, rebellion\, emigration\, murder\, loss\, longing\, as well as drinking\, revelry and hilarity and spaces of the otherworld deeply connected to identity\, place and history in Ireland. Many of these songs have never been recorded and survive as they are passed from generation to generation. In the Crankie Island Project\, Irish singer Cathy Jordan has made it her mission to preserve songs from every county on the island. \nRenowned for her stirring performances and expressive voice\, Cathy is lead singer and percussion player with traditional powerhouse Dervish. Her deep understanding and love of traditional Irish songs and singing has inspired her over the years to collect hundreds of songs which may have been otherwise forgotten. \n“Our songs are a part of our folklore; they ignite our memory and give us a sense of place. They are messages from our ancestors that evoke powerful imagery of landscape\, mythology and connect us with the strife and struggles of generations who have walked our common paths.” Cathy. \nDuring the pandemic\, Cathy began researching and recording songs from her native Roscommon. Wanting to use the Crankie box to illustrate the songs\, she collaborated with artist Peter Crann also based in Sligo. \nThe Crankie box is a quirky story-telling device dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries where an original illustrated scroll is wound onto two spools in a specially made box with a viewing screen. While the song is playing\, the long scroll is hand-cranked and stretched across the viewing platform\, providing an evolving visual depiction of the song. Crankie boxes can range from match box size to full stage dimensions and can be up to 12 meters in length.Inspired by the mix of visual and audio narratives\, and with support from the Arts Council\, Cathy began archiving songs from the four provinces and selected 32\, one for every county on the island\, that best represented traditional song types and would also lend themselves to illustration. \nThe majority of the songs chosen are from the traditional canon. \nThen came the mammoth task of arranging\, recording\, mixing and mastering\, a process which involved collaborations with over 50 musicians in 8 studios around Ireland. Duets include Cathy with Lisa O’Neill on the Cavan song ‘The Rocks Of Bawn’\, Donal Clancy on the Monaghan song ‘The Patriot Game’ and Andrew Hendy (The Mary Wallopers) on the Armagh song ‘Tanderagee’. \n“I traveled to Benny McCarthy’s studio in Waterford and hired musicians in the area and \nrecorded songs from Waterford\, Kilkenny\, Offaly and Carlow. In Sligo\, we recorded songs for the counties Meath\, Sligo\, Westmeath\, Louth and Longford. Antrim was the recording base for Wicklow\, Down\, Armagh\, Wexford and Antrim\, in Galway I recorded Galway and Mayo songs and so on. It was a wonderfully enjoyable process\, and I was honoured to work with such amazing musicians\, singers and engineers.” \nFor each recording\, an accompanying video was created using the Crankie box. The illustrations for the Crankie Island Songs have been beautifully drawn by a collective of Irish artists chosen from across the country who were tasked with making their own crankie box with a visual story for the song. Each unique Crankie box with its own style\, interpretation and texture was recorded on video and is part of the Crankie Island performances. \nFive years on\, the Crankie Island Project – this amazing and unique audio-visual collection – is ready for the nation to cherish and share with the world. The 32 songs are available to purchase as a download or stream and the accompanying illustrations (for each track) will be available free from crankieisland.com and YouTube. \n———————————————————————————- \nFrankie Gavin & Catherine McHugh \nComing from a musical family\, Frankie Gavin has played fiddle and flute since his teenage years. At the age of seventeen\, he won All-Ireland competitions for fiddle and flute. Originally influenced by the great Irish and American-Irish fiddle players such as James Morrison\, he later found himself playing with stars: The Rolling Stones\, Stephane Grappelli\, James Galway and Yehudi Menuhin\, and for celebrity audiences including four American presidents: J. F. K on his 1962 visit to Ireland\, followed later by Presidents Clinton\, Bush and Obama. \nPerhaps most importantly\, the name Frankie Gavin is synonymous with De Dannan\, the globally celebrated band he founded with Alec Finn in the mid-1970s. Over the years\, there have been a numerous star-studded line-ups\, and 2023 saw the birth of the latest incarnation of the band. De Dannan now comprises Frankie Gavin on fiddle and flute\, Ian Kinsella on guitar\, Diarmuid Ó Meachair on melodeon\, George Grass on Bouzouki and Kaitlin Cullen-Verhauz on vocals and cello. \n“The concert from Frankie Gavin in Armagh last night was life assuring. \nNot a person present was not blown away by the unfettered display of genius\, fiddle-craft\, knowledge of the music and deadly delivery\, from Frankie\, backed by the equally all in\, perceptive and empathethetic accompaniment of Catherine McHugh\, who was doing an inside job’ of accompaniment that was nothing if it wasn’t mind reading. \nWhilst the fireworks were continually mind blowing and entertaining\, the music was intact in its true dignity and fresh originality\, a feat that only a true genius on fire could deliver. The raw simplicity of the tunes from his early mentors were shared in the same time and space as was given to the tunes of virtuosic complexity. Hornpipes\, barndances\, slow airs\, flings\, complex harmonic variations\, intricate bow-work were all in the tapestry of the great story that Frankie had to tell us last night. The Old Ground Hotel Ennis. 9pm. \nCLICK HERE TO BUY TICKETS >> \n  \nCaoimhín Ó Fearghail \nCaoimhín Ó Fearghail is a multi-instrumentalist who comes from An Rinn in the Waterford Gaeltacht. A piper\, flute player and accompanist\, he is influenced by the many great traditional musicians and singers from his home area. \nHe has featured on a number of albums in recent years\, quite often as accompanist. His latest album\, however\, is a solo pipes album simply called ‘Uilleann Piping from County Waterford’ which is part of NPU’s ‘Ace & Deuce of Piping’ series. He also recorded an album with fiddler Paddy Tutty in 2018 called ‘Flute & Fiddle’. \nA frequent teacher and performer\, he has taught and performed solo\, and with groups such as Caladh Nua and Danú\, all over Ireland\, the US\, the UK\, Europe\, Newfoundland and New Zealand. \nCaoimhín was awarded Best Folk Instrumentalist in the 2021 RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards. \nSeán Ó Fearghail \nSeán Ó Fearghail is from An Rinn in the Waterford Gaeltacht. \nHe started playing the fiddle in primary school but it wasn’t long before he started to play the concertina and bouzouki as well. He has attended and taught at many music workshops around the country amongst them Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy and was greatly influenced by the music he heard. He has listened to and learnt from such great musicians as Tommy Peoples\, Matt Molloy\, Martin Hayes\, Noel Hill and Bobby Gardiner. \nHe obtained his Masters from the Music Department in the University of Limerick in 2010. He now resides in Co. Limerick. \nBrendan Clancy \nBrendan Clancy; Fiddle/Banjo\, hails from Stradbally\, Co. Waterford and has been playing Fiddle & Banjo for over 25 years now. He learnt a lot of his Music by playing in many of the local sessions with many locally renowned musicians. \nBrendan also played in a group with his brother Noel Clancy (Button Accordion & Melodeon) and his grandfather Tomás Clancy (RIP) on Mouthorgan. \nHe has also played and shared the stage with some of the top performers and bands in Irish Traditional Music\, including; Seamie O’Dowd\, Benny McCarthy\, The Awbeg Ceilí Band\, The Booley House\, Donnchadh Gough\, Mick McAuley and Ciarán Ó Gealbháin to name but a few. \n——————————————————- \nNell Ní Chróinín \nNell Ní Chróinín hails from the Múscraí Gaeltacht of West Cork\, where she grew up in the small village of Béal Áthá’n Ghaorthaidh. The Múscraí area is historically linked with a strong heritage of song and music and Nell was exposed to these local traditions from a very young age\, which throughout her career has been the corner stone to her identity as an artist and a traditional Sean Nós singer. \nHer immersion which had started at home continued in Primary and secondary school as a result of the singing scheme entitled ‘Scéim Amhránaíochta Aisling Gheal’ which aimed to preserve the local songs by teaching them to the younger generation of the area and encouraging them to sing them. Nell attended these classes from the age of 10 under the tuition of the wonderfully talented Máire Ní Chéilleachair with whom Nell accredits many of her successes. Máire would not only teach the songs\, but also the history of the songs and would expose the class to some old recordings of local singers who were no longer with us. This spurred Nell’s interest in the singing massively and she began to sing publicly from the age of 11 at local festivals or sessions. She enjoyed success as a younger singer\, including several underage singing medals and titles from various Irish festival competitions such as Oireachas na Samhna and The Fleadh Ceoil. \nHer accomplishments at the Oireachtas festival blossomed as she won the prestigious Corn Uí Riada competition in 2014. This was a momentous win for Nell personally\, as the youngest winner in the history of the competition at the time. It was however also a momentous for the wider Múscraí singing community as it was the first time any singer from her locality had won this accolade which was particularly significant as it was named after the local composer and highly acclaimed musician\, Seán Ó Riada. \nIn 2012 she was the youngest ever recipient of the TG4 Gradam Ceoil Amhránaí na Bliana award to which she believes is one of her highest honours and achievements to date. \nIn 2016 she became the lead singer with the highly renowned traditional band\, Danú. This for Nell was a change as she was so familiar with singing in the sean-nós style without accompaniment. This again helped her further develop as an artist\, crafting her own voice while still be firmly rooted in tradition. She is thoroughly enjoying exploring singing in this different context and she recorded her first album with Danú in 2018\, entitled Ten Thousand Miles. She regularly tours with the group in the USA. \n——————————————————- \nElaine Hogan & Sheila Garry \nElaine Hogan – Harp \nElaine Hogan hails from Ennis in Co. Clare. She has grown up with a love for all types of music\, but always felt a particular pull towards the Irish traditional world. She has toured extensively with her harp as part of various musical outfits\, and is a regular performer and tutor at festivals both at home and abroad.She went on to obtain her Masters from the World Irish Academy of music and dance in Limerick and is a much sought after accompanist\, featuring as a guest musician on many albums such as John Dwyer’s “The Dursey Sound” as well as releasing a duet album “The Shores of Lough Breda” in 2015 with fiddle player Sheila Garry. Elaine also released her solo album “ In Three Minds” in June of 2019\, as well as a quartet album with other noted Clare musicians Pádraig Rynne\, Tara Breen and Conor Crimmins called “Avalla”. \nSheila Garry – Fiddle \nSheila Garry comes from Ballynacally just outside Ennis and grew up in and around traditional Irish music. (Among her formative influences include fiddlers Vincent Griffin and Paula McMahon.) Her early interest in traditional music led her to University College Cork where she was the recipient of the Sean O’Riada memorial prize in 1998\,and then went on to the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick where she earned a Master’s in Ethnomusicology. Since then\, she’s been a past member of the Kilfenora Ceilí band and the Shannon Vale Ceilí band\, worked at Bunratty Castle\, and recorded for the “Baltimore Fiddle Fair” series and the “Riches of Clare” series. \nElaine and Sheila have released their latest album Two for Joy in May of this year\, 10 years since their last recording together The Shores of Lough Breda. Two for Joy is an assortment of modern and traditional tunes\, and features many of the compositions of Michael Dwyer\, as well as some compositions from both Sheila and Elaine themselves.

He has recorded and performed with various bands including Skipper’s Alley\, Aon Teanga:Un Chengey and Jiggy. He collaborates with Clare fiddler and viola player Ultan O’Brien. His debut solo album The Deepest Breath was released in November 2022. He was awarded “Singer of the year” in the Gradam Ceoil TG4 2024. \nEoghan Ó Ceannabháin is a Dublin-based singer\, songwriter\, and multi-instrumentalist. His musical roots are in sean-nós singing\, in the style of his father Peadar and he grew up listening to the likes of Sorcha Ní Ghuairim\, Seán Mac Dhonncha\, Colm Ó Caoidheáin amongst other greats from the tradition. He is also influenced by folk singers from the English language tradition such as Liam Weldon\, Luke Kelly\, Anne Briggs\, Margaret Barry and Thomas McCarthy. \nEoghan is a member of the band Skipper’s Alley. He has worked with Mary Ann Kennedy from Scotland and Ruth Keggin from the Isle of Man on their Aon Teanga: Un Chengey album (2015). He has performed with folk/electronica band Jiggy\, featuring on both their albums\, Translate (2017) and Hypernova (2020). He also collaborates with Clare fiddle and viola player Ultan O’Brien\, their debut album Solas an Lae won best album at the RTÉ Folk Awards in 2021. \nIn recent years\, Eoghan has come into his own as a solo artist and songwriter. His songs – written in both English and Irish – build on his sean-nós singing foundations but combine hard-hitting lyrics with other musical influences to create a rich\, contemporary sound. His debut solo album\, ‘The Deepest Breath’ was released in November 2022\, receiving four star reviews from The Irish Times\, Songlines and Hot Press. \n  \nGino Lupari\, Tim Edey\, Dermot Byrne & Gerry “Banjo” O’Connor \nGino is one of the most respected bodhrán players on the road today. He has been a professional musician for the past 30 years. In that time\, he has performed at major festivals all over the world with the band 4 Men & A Dog (Gino is a founding member). He has also recorded vocal tracks on all of “the dogs” albums. Gino is in demand as a session player and has played on many recordings with artists such as Sinead O’Connor and Shane McGowan\, and most recently on the ground- breaking album from Declan O’Rourke. Gino co- presented the ground-breaking 1st live Fleadh TV programme from Derry city. \nBorn in Tipperary into a family steeped in Irish traditional music\, Gerry O’Connor is a banjo virtuoso. He started playing banjo and fiddle in his early teens and in 1977 he joined popular folk band Tipsy Sailor. Between 1981 and 1984\, he toured with The Wild Geese and recorded two albums with the group. He then joined Dublin ballad group Moonshine and Jury’s Irish Cabaret. \nIn 1990\, Gerry released his first solo album “Time to Time”\, a classic benchmark for banjo in Irish music. He joined Four Men & a Dog in 1992\, the first Irish band to win UK Folk Roots album of the year. One of the most popular Irish trad groups on the touring circuit worldwide\, they have recorded four albums\, performed at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games\, and recorded and toured with rock and roll legends “The Band”. \nGerry has also recorded with many artists\, including Christy Moore\, Bonnie Tyler\, and appears on the “Lord of the Dance” soundtrack. He joined Sharon Shannon and Big Band in 2008\, recording two CDs and two DVDs. Their rendition of “The Galway Girl” became the most downloaded song in Irish music. He has also recorded and toured with Sharon Corr and played on The Corrs album “White Light”. In 2011\, he joined rock guitar superstar Joe Bonamassa’s Acoustic Band recording two U.S. \nBillboard No1 albums and DVDs “Live in Vienna Opera House” and “Live at The Albert Hall”. Multiple tours followed including a world tour in 2013. Following the death of friend and banjo legend Barney McKenna\, Gerry guested with The Dubliners on their 50 years anniversary tour. That year\, The Dublin Legends were born\, and the band continue to carry on the legacy and spirit of The Dubliners. \nTim Edey is multi- instrumentalist and singer. In 2012\, he won Musician of the Year 2012 at BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. He has toured the world and recorded with most of the major names in celtic and contemporary roots music including\, The Chieftains\, Christy Moore\, Sharon Shannon\, Natalie MacMaster\, Altan\, Capercaillie\, Brendan Power\, Michael McGoldrick\, Seamus Begley\, Dougie Maclean\, The Barra MacNeills\, JP Cormier\, Frankie Gavin\, Shaun Davey\, Session A9\, Lunasa\, Vinnie Kilduff\, Mary Black\, Session A9\, Julie Fowlis\, Frankie Gavin to name but a few. \nTim is now a name on the world stage in his own right and is rated by many to be one of the world’s finest melodeon and guitar players in the folk and contemporary scene today. Originally from Broadstairs in Kent and of Irish descent\, Tim honed his style learning from his father Richard\, a fine guitarist\, and listening to Ed Boyd\, Steve Cooney and Django Reinhardt and Arty McGlynn. \nTim now a name on the world stage in his own right after seventeen years of hard work\, is rated by many to be one of the world’s finest ever melodeon and guitar players in the folk and contemporary scene. \nDermot Byrne is one of Ireland’s finest traditional musicians having been awarded the Irish Television station\, TG4’s Traditional Musician of the Year in 2013. He hails from Buncrana in the Inishowen peninsula in the North West of Ireland. Taught to play the accordion by his father\, renowned musician Tomas O’Beirne\, Dermot mastered the two and single-row accordion by his teens. \nInitially guesting on accordion on two of Irish folk music band Altan’s recordings “The Red Crow” and “Island Angel”\, Dermot became a member of the band from 1994 until 2013 and featured on three of the Donegal-based group’s albums\, Blackwater\, Runaway Sunday and Another Sky. In addition to his solo albums\, Dermot has guested on collaborations with many great musicians including Seamus and Manus McGuire\, Sharon Shannon\, Frankie Gavin\, Pierre Schryer\, Tim O’Brien\, The Stunning\, Salsa Celtica and the late jazz violinist\, Stephane Grappell.

A native Gaelic speaker\, Brìghde roots her music in her language and culture. She rose to prominence as a prodigy of traditional music but has since begun a journey to take the smallpipes into unchartered territory. She has devised a unique way of arranging for pipe music that emphasises the rich textural drones of the instrument; the constancy of sound that creates a trance-like atmosphere\, played with enticing virtuosic liquidity. She draws inspiration from the world of interconnected piping traditions\, but her most recent album brings in influence from ambient\, avant garde and electronic music.\nHer mesmerising musicianship has won her many awards and media recognition\, including BBC Young Folk Award\, BBC Horizon Award\, SAY Award nomination and a wide array of collaborators include Caroline Polachek\, Colin Stetson\, Gruff Rhys\, Radie Peat. \nTracy Ryan and Ryan O’Donnell \nSinger/Flute Player Tracy Ryan and multi-instrumentalist Ryan O’Donnell have been playing music together for 15 years and are currently working on an album of songs.\nTracy from Newport\, County Tipperary\, is an accomplished flute player and singer. Over the years she has performed and recorded with artists such as Shane\nMcGowan\, Micheál O’Súilleabháin and The Limerick Chamber Orchestra. \nRyan from Omagh\, Co Tyrone is a sought after accompanist with an authentic traditional style for songs and tunes. Ryan performs regularly and has appeared on over a dozen recordings over the last 15 years.\nTogether on voice\, bouzouki and flute\, they will perform a range of traditional songs\non the night. \nLeonard Barry\, Andy Morrow\, Seamie O’Dowd and Kaitlin Cullen Verhauz \nLeonard Barry\, Andy Morrow and Seamie O’Dowd have known each other for over 20 years through meeting at various festivals in Ireland and playing music together that has seen them perform at nationally and internationally. Most recent performances this year has seen them playing at various Festivals in Denmark\, France\, Spain and Ireland. Whilst Andy and Seamie feature on Leonard’s new album “Littoral” released earlier this year to critical acclaim at home and abroad. They are joined by New York native Dublin based cellist Kaitlin Cullen-Verhauz who’s is well known for her work with Frankie Gavin and De Dannan and Eoghan O’Ceannabháin. The tunes are featured Leonard’s new album with songs from Seamie O’Dowd\, the material reflecting the many years they have spent together. \nLeonard Barry from Kerry and now living in Sligo has been one of the most sought-after uilleann pipers\, sharing the stage with artists including Lisa O’Neill\, Kevin Burke\, Michael McGoldrick\, Allan McDonald Chris Stout\, Catriona McKay\, and Daoiri Farrell amongst a host of others. Leonard launched his third solo album “Littoral” at this years Celtic Connections in Glasgow which in turn has led to a tour of the UK\, Ireland and festivals throughout Europe and Ireland this year including the Doolin Folk Festival\, Tradition Now in the National Concert Hall Dublin\, Irish Cultural Centre in London amongst many others with this trio. \nAndy Morrow comes from a musical family in County Leitrim; his older brother Tom is the fiddle player with Dervish. Also a multi-award-winning fiddler\, Andy started his musical journey winning various national titles whilst still at school. Andy has toured Australia and Ireland Live Dred Theatre Co’s production Trad and is a regular performer and teacher at various festivals throughout Ireland and abroad. His 2006 album with concertina player Tony O’Connell and the late Arty McGlynn on guitar is a timeless masterpiece\, widely regarded as one of the classic albums of Irish traditional music. Andy previously collaborated with Leonard and Seamie with Rick Epping in the band New Road\, on the album Stone Walls and Street Lights. \nSeamie O’Dowd is a guitarist\, singer\, and songwriter who also plays fiddle\, harmonica\, mandolin\, bouzouki\, and other instruments. His musical experience spans four decades\, from his first radio appearance at the age of ten on Radio Eireann programme Young Musicians\, and playing publicly with his father\, the renowned Sligo fiddle player Joe O’Dowd. He has since played with many great musicians and bands including Mairtin O’Connor\, Cathal Hayden\, Christy Moore\, Declan Synott\, The Chieftains\, Jimmy Higgins\, Dervish\, Matt Molloy\, Liam O’ Flynn\, Thom Moore and Dick Gaughan. As part of the Masters of Irish Music project devised by Martin Hayes\, he\, along with Mairtin O’Connor and Cathal Hayden\, played concerts in the Sydney Opera House and at the Lincoln Centre in New York. Seamie was also a member of Dervish for six years\, during which time he played with them at the legendary Rock in Rio festival in Brazil. \nKaitlin Cullen-Verhauz a New York City native and Dublin-based vocalist and cross-genre cellist\, Kaitlin Cullen-Verhauz has progressively garnered recognition for her versatility on stage and in the studio In Ireland Kaitlin frequently partners with RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Award winner Eoghan O’Ceannabháin\, recorded on his debut album\, The Deepest Breath. In 2022 Kaitlin joined Frankie Gavin and De Dannan at Théâtre Municipal le Colisée in Lens\, France\, and then again at the Orchestre Philharmonique De Monte Carlo as a cellist and featured singer.

Clare\, V95 X754 \nSean Lynch:\nI began playing music at the young age of 4. I started learning the tin whistle when I began attending school\, briefly progressed to the flute\, and then fell in love with the Uilleann pipes. Having John Twin McNamara as the headmaster of our national school was truly an honor and a gift. His guidance both academically and musically was a key part of my journey.  In Achill\, we are blessed with numerous local musicians who play at a fantastic standard and a somewhat different style. My piping career began locally before I made trips to the pipers’ clubs in Dublin and Armagh. It was there that I started gathering external influences\, which were enhanced by the bagpiping tradition of Achill Island. I believe this has shaped my style and my love for traditional/folk music as a whole. To date\, I have been involved in many recordings for TV and radio\, performing throughout Ireland\, Europe\, and the United States\, both as a solo artist and as part of various groups.\n\nChongie Road:\nChongie Road” is a mesmerizing and deeply introspective album by Achill musician\, Seán Lynch. With this project\, Lynch embarks on a remarkable musical journey\, encapsulating the various stages of his life and career through the lens of ten evocative tracks. Each song on the album serves as a poignant reflection of the moments\, experiences\, and influences that have shaped him along his life’s journey.\n\nAs the album progresses\, listeners are taken on a sonic odyssey\, with each subsequent track representing a distinct period in Seán’s life. These compositions weave together an intricate tapestry of emotions\, memories\, and musical influences that have defined his artistic evolution. From the second track “The Road to Lisdoonvarna”\, which pays homage to Achill Island’s rich pipe band tradition with the use of the distinctive snare drum to its culmination with the poignant final track\, “Chongie Road” highlighting the significance of home and its people and their profound influence on Seán as an artist.\n\n“Chongie Road” is a powerful tribute to the place that has shaped his identity and creative spirit\, a reflection on the sense of belonging and the enduring connection to one’s roots. “Chongie Road” is not just an album; it’s a heartfelt narrative\, a musical autobiography\, and a soul-stirring testament to the enduring impact of one’s life experiences on their artistry.

Clare\, V95 X754 \n‘The Lads of Laois’ is Robert and James Harvey’s first duet album on flute\, banjo\, mandolin and tin whistle on a set of sixteen new tracks accompanied by Caoimhín Ó Fearghail on guitar\, Ryan Molloy on piano and Niall Preston on bodhrán. The album showcases music from County Laois and its environs\, combining newly composed tunes associated with the county with tunes from older publications of traditional music since the 1780s. The project was inspired by lockdown projects for Laois County Council and Comhaltas which led to Robert and James reflecting on the lesser-known repertoire from their homeplace\, resulting in an introspective selection of tunes that showcases the beauty of the Slieve Bloom Mountains. The CD was recorded at Roundwood House in July 2023 produced by Laoise O’Brien and engineered by Grammy Award winner Ben Rawlins. For their Ennis Trad Fest launch\, Robert and James will be joined by guitarist Conal O Kane.
