Followed by Trad Disco with Ollie Mulhooly. \nBOOK NOW >> \nJohn McSherry\, Brendan Quinn and Francis McIlduff are three phenomenal musicians who first got together as a trio at Belfast’s Féile Trad Trail in August 2022. \nJohn has been a major figure in Irish music for over 20 years. He is a composer\, producer\, arranger\, and established studio session musician of world renown\, having recorded and performed with artists including Sinéad O’Connor\, Rod Stewart\, Nanci Griffith\, Gary Kemp\, The Corrs and Clannad. A founder member of top traditional bands Lunasa\, Tamalin\, Donal Lunny’s Coolfin\, and Irish-American super-group the Olllam\, John has produced a string of critically acclaimed and innovative albums\, both solo and collaborative. \nBrendán has toured the world as a singer-songwriter and traditional accompanist for many years. Hugely influenced by his love of Irish music and the Irish language\, his ability to convey the stories of strangers and his own experiences through song has created his distinctive\, captivating style. \nFrancis McIlduff\, a member of the legendary McPeake musical family from Belfast\, was immersed in traditional Irish music from an early age. He debuted with the family band Clann McPeake in the 1980’s\, and has gone on to play with leading outfits including Alias Ron Kavana\, Afterhours\, Sin É and more recently At First Light\, the band in which Francies and John first created the “double pipes” sound that has become their trademark. \nWhen the trio began playing together at Féile\, the depth of their musical connection and rapport was instantly evident\, so much so that they decided to record an album together. Wanting to keep their sound as authentic as possible\, they opted to record in Redbox studios\, the working home of good friend and musical comrade\, Dónal O’Connor. Playing live as a trio instead of multi-tracked separate takes\, the album was recorded in sixteen hours and mixes traditional and modern tunes with Brendan’s contemporary songwriting. With “dualling” uilleann pipes\, soaring whistles\, interweaving harmonies\, rock steady bodhran and guitar grooves\, the tunes and songs are delivered with a confidence\, energy and drive that only a live approach can create.

DESCRIPTION:Venue: The Sanctuary\, Cruises Bar\, Ennis \nDate & Time: Thursday\, 9th of Nov 2023\, 8pm \nSeán Lyons grew up in a family steeped in traditional music and singing and he is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist and singer. \nAfter playing the uilleann pipes and tin whistle from a young age\, Seán developed an interest in folk music as a teenager and is a passionate interpreter of traditional and folk songs. It was during this period that he began playing the guitar and writing songs. \nIn 2020\, Seán released his debut single Lady Winter and in 2021\, he followed this with Finavarra Reverie. Seán’s debut EP of original songs Juliana EP was released on February 3rd 2023. It is a collection of five songs written in the folk idiom. The title track\, Juliana\, is a poignant lament for La Juliana\, a Spanish ship that was wrecked off the coast of Sligo in 1588.

Carty was awarded the TG4 Gradam Ceoil Traditional Music of the Year award in 2003. He has released several solo albums on fiddle and banjo including I Will If I Can\, Last Night’s Fun and At It Again. He has also recorded a number of duet albums including Pathway to the Well and Out of the Ashes with flute-player Matt Molloy\, At Complete Ease with fiddle-player Brian Rooney\, Settle Out of Court with his daughter\, the singer and banjo player Maggie Carty and most recently The Wavy Bow Collection with his son\, fiddle player James Carty. \nHe has been joined in this musical exploration by accomplished piper\, Mike McGoldrick.\nA co-founder of Flook and Lúnasa\, and a linchpin of Capercaillie’s line-up since 1998\, Manchester-born flute/whistle and uilleann pipes maestro Michael McGoldrick has in recent years performed around the globe in ex-Dire Straits legend Mark Knopfler’s band – including a tour with both Knopfler and Bob Dylan. Despite this lengthy list of stellar collaborations\, his true genius lies in his own trailblazing work as a player and composer\, brilliantly showcased on his three solo albums to date. On top of all his other projects he also fronts the exhilarating Michael McGoldrick Band. \nTogether John and Mike will explore the exciting and innovative combination of the banjo with uilleann pipes\, as well as utilising fiddle\, tenor guitar and flute. DESCRIPTION:“Album launch”\n\n\nThe Old Ground Hotel Ennis\, upstairs room.\n\n\nSunday 13th November 2022 @ 2:30pm\n\n\nBrian Hughes & Dave Sheridan\n“However long the day”\n\n\nFree entry.\n\n\n***********************************\n\n\nBoth Brian Hughes and Dave Sheridan have been very well-known musicians on the traditional Irish music scene for many years now\, having both recorded highly successful albums in the past.\n\n\nBrian & Dave have known one another for many years\, and have played in sessions together at many different venues during their careers but this is the first time that these two musicians have recorded together\, and they have certainly produced an absolute gem of an album\, which has been well worth the wait.\n\n\n\nBrian has produced six CDs to date\, and has become a hugely influential whistle player to musicians all over the world. Widely regarded as one of the best players of his generation\, his playing has changed the course of whistle playing as we know it today and his piping has a style which seems to be uniquely perfect for his understated mastery\, in particular on the flat set of uilleann pipes.\n\nHe is highly sought after for his teaching skills on both whistle and pipes and he has taught\, performed and toured at festivals and music schools all over Ireland\, England & Europe.\n\n\n\nDave has also recorded many albums over the last number of years\, and has become a hugely respected musician at home and abroad. He has recorded with Ciarán Somers and Nicolas Quemener on a recording called ‘Faoi Bhláth’ and has also recorded two albums with ‘The Raw Bar Collective’\, featuring Brendan McCarthy\, Conal O Gráda\, Colm Murphy and Nell Ní Chróinín. He has played all over the globe including tours to China\, Japan\, Mozambique and USA. Dave is a fiddle player of huge depth and warmth\, and he possesses a huge repertoire of music.\n\nThis is hugely evident in his beautiful style of playing on this CD\, where his phrasing blends perfectly with the sound of both the whistle and the Uilleann Pipes.\n\nFor this new recording\, two incredible traditional musicians have entwined their musical journeys together\, and they have produced a recording full of sound and soul\, mystery and magic\, depth and delight. The sound of the Uilleann pipes and Fiddle has for such a long time been recognised as one of the most glorious combinations in Traditional Irish music\, but when this fusion of sound is played down in the flat key of C by two masters of their own craft\, the sound transforms to something greater than music alone. The hypnotic trance like quality of the music oozing from these rooted musicians seems to enter every pore\, and transports the listener to a very different place indeed.\n\n“However Long the Day” will transport listeners for many years to come\, and will surely be\nrecognised as one of the finest duet pairings we have heard for many years. The music is further enhanced on this new recording by the amazingly talented musicians Garry O Briain\, Jim Higgins\, Michelle Sheridan & Eric de Buitlear\, who all feature on the album.

DESCRIPTION:“Album launch”\n\n\nJohn Tunney “The Immigrant: A Stone on the Cairn of Tradition”\n\n\nSunday 13th Nov 2022 @ 1pm\n\n\nVenue: The café in the green\, (The copper jug)\n\n\nFree entry.\n\n\n*******************************\n\n\nThe Immigrant: A Stone on the Cairn of Tradition\, John Tunney\nAlso featuring Paddy Óg\, Cathal\, Brigid\, Michael and Conall Tunney\, Maura Hickey\, and a dozen more of the extended family.\n\n\nJohn Tunney comes from a long line of west Ulster traditional singers that includes his father\, the legendary Paddy Tunney\, and his famed grandmother Brigid Tunney. This is his first solo album.\n\nTHE IMMIGRANT has been described by Rita Gallagher (TG4 Traditional Singer of the Year\, 2017) as ‘a wonderful weave of songs that traverse Ireland and beyond\, a treasure trove\, a stunning mix that includes four new compositions from John and three from the late Paddy Tunney\, along with some of the most well-known and familiar “Tunney songs”. A standout track is ‘Hybrasil’\, Paddy’s ode and love poem to his wife Sheila\, which John sings so beautifully.’\n\n\n​From the very first song\, the title track ‘The Immigrant’\, this album sets out to show that unaccompanied\, traditional song forms can tackle even the most burning current issues of contemporary Ireland. This searing tale of a Bosnian survivor of the Srebrenica massacre\, who has made a home for himself and his family in Mayo\, has been labelled ‘the best\, most important song to appear on the scene for a long time’ by former Critics Group members Jim Carroll and Pat McKenzie. The modern Clare emigration song\, ‘Around the Hand’\, with the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Centre as its background\, is in a similar vein.\n\n\n\nAlongside such new songs are John’s interpretations of Tunney classics\, including ‘The Rambling Boys of Pleasure’ and ‘The Royal Blackbird’\, as well as stirring reworkings of less well-known family versions of ‘The Pride of Glencoe’ and ‘Captain Coulston’.\n\n\n\nA key component of the album’s rich sound texture are six duets involving John’s five siblings and his son\, Conall\, and a further two tracks on which many family voices sing in unison. The result is a body of recordings that Lillis Ó Laoire (TG4 Traditional Singer of the Year\, 2020) has described as ‘wonderful soundscapes that present old verses and new with deep characteristic conviction. These songs send resonances of a rich past echoing into the future.’

With his band and trio line-up has played Celtic Connections\, WOMAD\, Lorient\, Ortigueira\, Cambridge Folk Festival\, Labadoux\, William Kennedy International Piping Festival\, Intercéltico do Morrazo\, Pardiñas\, Zas\, Getxo Folk and Piping Live\, receiving always good critiques both from the attending audience and other folk and traditional artistes achieving very interesting musical connections\, some of which will be appearing in the new album such as Jarlath Henderson\, Blackie O’Connell\, Ross Ainslie\, Andy May\, Germán Díaz and Ali Levack amongst others. \nApart from his more traditional side\, artistes from all types of music genre have requested Anxo Lorenzo’s collaboration with his bagpipes such as Marta Sanchez for the theme tune of the Vuelta a España 2016\, Monica Molina\, Ska-p\, The National Jazz Orchestra and Amistades Peligrosas achieving a natural fusion of the Galician bagpipes with other musical styles and opening new horizons at the cutting edge of music.

November 2022 @ 3pm \nSimon Pfisterer “Halfway there” & “Another way to go” \nFree entry. \n************************* \nDouble Album Release – \nSimon Pfisterer: “Half Way There” & “Another Way to Go” \nUilleann piper Simon Pfisterer is releasing his debut albums “Half Way There” and “Another Way to Go” at this year’s Ennis Trad Fest.\nGrowing up in his home of Bavaria\, Germany\, Simon started to play different kinds of bagpipes from all over Europe at the age of 8 and found his love for the uilleann pipes and Irish traditional music when he was 12. After finishing school\, in 2016 he moved to Ireland to study Irish Traditional Music at the University of Limerick where he graduated in 2020. \nFor his debut release as a solo musician\, Simon decided to not only record one\, but two albums:\n“Half Way There”\, implying the half-way mark of the proverbial 21 years it takes to be a piper Simon reached recently\, contains solely traditional music. Taking many clear influences from important pipers\, past and present\, it constitutes a humble bow in front of past masters and the tradition. \n“Another Way to Go” on the other hand\, shows Simon’s abilities of thinking outside the box and adapting music that was not written for the uilleann pipes onto the instrument. 16 tracks of classical music\, ranging from 16th century Spanish choral works adapted for 3 full sets of uilleann pipes\, over fugues by Bach\, country dances by Mozart\, to 20th Century avantgarde compositions\, jazz and videogame classics\, show what is possible on the uilleann pipes.

Ennis (back room) \nFree entry. \n*************************** \nAig an taigh: \nAs the title suggests\, Aig an taigh was recorded at home. During the pandemic\, we had time to reflect and learn. My husband (Noel Eccles) and I had never spent so much time together nor collaborated in such limited circumstances.\nVoice and percussion might not be the first combination you think of\, but we decided to sit down and figure it out.\nNiamh O’Brien and I regularly tour Germany\, but as tours were cancelled due to Covid-19\, we decided to record a concert at home together to connect. Recording ourselves\, we were out of our comfort zone: I felt a need to get back to my roots. We looked at some familiar songs before adding new ones. I feel a real sense of gratitude for where we live in Co. Wexford; the landscape surrounding us is inspiring\, so we let it take a hand in guiding us. \nThis album is dedicated to Paddy Moloney. \nNoel and I both worked extensively with Paddy. Initially\, he was my boss\, but latterly he was my friend. I learned so much from working with Paddy and The Chieftains. He was driven\, passionate\, full of mischief\, dedicated\, talented\, and a natural collaborator; he introduced me to a world of music\, musicians\, singers\, and dancers. I am so grateful\, and Paddy\, you are sorely missed.

From an early age Mary found herself in the company of great masters of East Clare music\, such as John Naughton\, Martin Rochford\, P. Joe Hayes\, Francie Donnellan\, Joe Bane\, Mikey Donoghue\, Paddy Grogan and Bill Malley.\n\n\nMary will be launching her eagerly awaited book “Sundays at Lena’s”\, a selection of recordings and tunes mostly from the 1970’s featuring some of these local greats. She will be joined by her daughter Sorcha Costello\, her brother Andrew MacNamara and Geraldine Cotter to play some of the tunes as they are transcribed in this collection.\n\n\nMary’s book has been published with the assistance of an Arts Council\, Deis Recording and Publication Award 2022.

Clare \nTickets €15.00 per person. \nClick here to buy tickets now >> \nStrictly over 18s. \n  \n*********** \n  \nBanjo-player Angelina Carberry has been announced as Ceoltóir na Bliana/Musician of the Year. \nBorn in Manchester but has lived in Longford\, where her family are from\, since the 1990s. \nShe is widely respected as a musician and has performed extensively in Ireland and abroad. In 1998\, she released Memories from the Holla with her father Peter Carberry and guitarist John Blake. \nThis was followed by a duet recording with Martin Quinn in 2003\, and her debut solo album An Traidisiún Beo in 2008. \nHer second solo recording\, Pluckin’ Mad\, was released in 2014\, followed by a duet recording with accordion-player Dan Brouder\, A Waltz for Joy\, in 2017. Most recently\, she was the subject of a tribute as part of the Trad Ireland 20/20 Visionaries series. \nAngelina was also a member of the all-female group The Bumblebees. \n  \n************** \n  \nPeter Carberry\, a box player of some renown\, is a straight-talker when it comes to his life-long passion – traditional Irish music.\nHe learned to play the box\, or accordion\, at the tender age of nine at his grandparents’ house\, just two fields away from where he now lives in a place called The Holla. Given that his father Kevin\, and his uncle Peter were top class musicians\, it was little surprise that his path in life would be steered by music. \n  \n*************** \n  \nDan Brouder is a well-respected exponent of the West Limerick accordion style from Monagae\, a parish on the outskirts of Newcastle West. He learned his music in the surrounding parishes of Ardagh\, Carrigkerry and Glin on the Sliabbh Luachra boundary from accordion player Donal de Barra\, Athea Co.Limerick and from flute players Francis O’Connor and Donal O’Sullivan who learned their music from Peadlin Aherne\, fiddle player and Pajo Gleesen flute player from the 1930s and 40’s and whose styles are strongly bedded in West Limerick roots. Dan plays regularly in sessions and festivals in both West Limerick and around the country. He has performed with various musicians at numerous festivals throughout Europe Asia and America. His debut album The Larks Air released in 2011 was well received in the traditional music circles and through reviewers of traditional music and culture. \n  \n*************** \n  \nJohn Blake’s style on steel-strung guitar is solid\, sympathetic\, and very musical. He uses DADGAD and has what I identify as a traditional approach to accompaniment – more underpinning and less fireworks! This style suits many melody players\, particularly those with deep connections in the music today\, as you can see from the discography at the back of the book. John is also a fine flute player and his familiarity with the tunes is evident in his accompaniment. He has played with the Kane sisters\, fiddler Jesse Smith\, At The Racket\, and many others. \n  \n*************** \n  \n“Five Star Quartet with Colm Murphy” \nJohnny McCarthy (fiddle\, flute)\, Con Fada O Drisceoil (box\, songs)\, Eoin O Riabhaigh (uilleann pipes)\, Pat Herring Ahern (guitar) and Colm Murphy (bodhrán) have played together in many combinations over the years in session\, concert and recording studio. McCarthy\, O Drisceoil and Ahern make up the long-established Four Star Trio\, whose music is based on the subtle interplay of fiddle and accordion laid on a solid guitar foundation. \nThey have a particular interest in the music of Sliabh Luachra. In more recent times\, O Riabhaigh and McCarthy have established a powerful pipes and fiddle duo. They are joined by Colm Murphy\, the renowned bodhran player who for many years provided the rhythmic cornerstone for De Dannan. This musical pentagon comes together for Ennis Trad Fest in a rare big band format. Expect lively tunes\, old and new\, mixed with more reflective pieces and a sprinkling of Con Fada’s hilarious songs.

Clare. \nFree entry\, all ages welcome! \n******************************* \nThe long-awaited solo album by Anthony Quigney is finally here and will be released at the Ennis Trad Fest on Nov 14th. Anthony has been a member of the world-renowned Kilfenora Ceili Band for almost 3 decades and has recorded 7 studio albums with the band in that time. \nThis cheekily titled album\, “Breath-Taking”\, alludes to the countless breaths that Anthony has taken to make music on the flute\, in a career that has already spanned over 40 years.\nIn this collection of his favourite tunes both old and new he draws on the influences of his native Clare and further a field while playing them in his own unique style. Staying true to the Tradition while exploring new ground is at the heart of Anthony’s musical philosophy and is reflected throughout Breath-Taking. \nHe is joined on this recording by friends and family. He is delighted and proud to have his son Aidan on piano in his first ever studio recording while his sister Marie joins him for 2 selections on piano. He is also joined by Conal O’Kane of Goitse fame on guitar\, TG4 Young musician of the year 2020\, Sharon Howley on cello\, Eimear Howley on fiddle and Brian O’Grady’s on Double Bass are all Kilfenora Ceili Band mates and add wonderful colour. And Dermott Sheedy’s bodhrán rhythms pulse throughout.
