‘Ar Shiúl Leis Na Síóga – Away With the Fairies’

Catharine Kingcome

From melody to canvas, a narrative portrait painter’s lyrical response to Irish music and
musicians. Rich in imagination, memory and emotion.

Catharine has been a painter and fiddle player for 40 years. Here she introduces her debut
album Ar Shiúl Leis Na Sióga – Away With the Fairies, a heartfelt reflection of the music that
shaped and inspired her creative journey, with 25 of her paintings created between 1988 and
2000. She has gained wide recognition in Ireland and across the diaspora for these portraits
of leading Irish musicians and other works inspired by the music. To her, the music and the
paintings it inspired are inseparable, each shaping the other. Her book and album together
tell this story, forming a unique project where painting and music share equal weight.

Martin Hayes says of her music:
“I’ve known Catharine for many years as a painter of traditional Irish music themes and
people. I was aware that she also played the fiddle, though I had always assumed it was
something she pursued casually. What a lovely surprise, then, to hear her debut recording
and discover that she is a very fine fiddle player. Not only a fine fiddler, but a musician of real
taste and deep understanding of the tradition, evident in her thoughtful tune choices and
sensitive interpretations. This is a warm, authentic recording of traditional Irish fiddle
playing.”
