‘An Bhearna Bhán‘

Jillian O’Malley

‘Congratulations Jillian, on your brilliant solo flute album.

Practically all of the music is Mayo-based and very well researched, highlighting old music from her own place and elsewhere in the county. The album brings to life the music, most of which would not have been heard or recorded in recent times.

Also included are a number of compositions in the traditional idiom which I think are consistent with the music of the past. All selections are played with decisive accuracy, pitching and wonderful tone, with tasteful accompaniment throughout.

It’s a top-class album! Jillian’s style is very much her own and her love of the music comes shining through!’

Matt Molloy

‘This is a hugely enjoyable album, both as a collection of exceptional flute playing – which never flags throughout the whole CD – and for its insight into the Mayo tradition. It comes from and simultaneously creates a strong sense of place, and is meticulously curated to demonstrate a deep knowledge, respect and a passion for the music of West Mayo.’
